Tempest and a small group of people are approaching where Felix stands. Up front, a man decked out in an almost complete set of armor, the obvious "leader"; a dwarvish young woman with bright red hair skipping along behind; Tempest and another elf taking up the rear, and Felix will note that the elf bears a striking resemblance to the uncle in the previous memory, though this one is younger with dark hair. The man in the front comes to an abrupt stop with a yelp, as though he walked into something - and Felix will see the air ripple in that area before disappearing.
"Ah!!" The little dwarf exclaims between her giggling. "They don't want Breis here!"
"Cyr, that isn't very nice." The knight, Breis, responds, face scrunched up in overdramatic pain. "I'd like to see you try to pass through."
Cyr puffs up and steps forward with purpose - only for the same results. "Told you."
"Shut up, shut up!"
"Calm down," The elf says, fighting back a smile as he holds up his hands. He takes a few steps forward and holds his hand up against the barrier with a curious hum. "I can't tell what sort of magic this is, but it's powerful. It seems as though it doesn't want anyone passing through."
"Not even Baelvan . . . " Cyr's eyebrows draw down and she crosses her arms, hmphing at the barrier. "That isn't very nice when we're almost there."
"Tempest?" Breis asks the suspiciously quiet mage, and she lifts her head quickly as though caught - and the knight scowls at the look of amusement he catches before Tempest forces her usual neutral expression back into place. "Care to give it a go when you're done laughing?"
"I wasn't laughing." Tempest shoots back immediately, but she does step forward. She can't sense the magic the way her cousin can, but she holds her hand out anyway and comments, full of sarcasm, "I bet you it will let me through because none of your are a decent mage—"
She cuts off when she stumbles through the barrier, and there's a long moment of silence as she stares at her party and they stare back.
"Well. Seems as though I'm right."
And then it hits her - and Felix will feel it too; a sudden, intense pain that goes bone deep and further, making his knees weak and his lungs seize in panic. Tempest cries out and doubles over, and it feels like an eternity until it passes.
"Dark magic." She finally gasps, hand pressed to her chest. "That would explain it."
"Are you all right?" Her cousin asks, and she glances up to find him pressed against the barrier, incredibly concerned. She wave shim off and stands up straight, glancing behind her at the tents she can see a few yards away.
"I'm fine. I'll find him myself, since the lot of you can't get through. I promise not to take long."
She doesn't wait for an answer when she turns to walk right into the center of the encampment.
There's tents everywhere, of all shapes and sizes - some that a few human-sized creatures could fit in, while others could fit an entire village - it's less a camping ground and more reminds her of a traveling village instead, as she can see signs displaying what some of the tents have to offer, as well as makeshift displays for weapons, tools, food - it's rather amazing.
But it isn't long until she finds herself suddenly surrounded by . . . she's only heard rumors of their existence, but coming face-to-face with the dragonborn is something of an experience. Humans who are part dragon, and not a one resembles the other. Some have scales all over their body, while others only have it in patches on their face, both symmetrical and not. Some have features of a dragon while others - she's certain she saw a tail or two.
And they all look alarmed by this sudden intruder, and Tempest immediately holds up a hand, and undoes her belt to remove her sword and toss it on the ground to show them she means no harm. "My apologies for intruding upon your homes, my friends, and without invitation. But I seek the priest Moadan of your tribe. If you could—"
An older dragonborn cuts her off, and much to her surprise he seems welcoming and even pleasant, and the tension disappears as quickly as it first appeared. He says that they've been expecting her, and eagerly the dragonborn leads Tempest to a tent.
She's greeted at the opening by a man who is more human than dragon, at least in features. His face is covered in dark scales that shimmer purple in the light, and the hand that he offers Tempest is clawed, despite the one holding open the tent being human. He makes an attempt to give them a bit of privacy by pulling on the string to close the flaps to the tent, but it comes loose immediately - and he laughs heartily, admitting that hoping for privacy around here was for naught. He pockets the string.
"Please, come in and sit, I've heard so much about you." He says pleasantly, and Tempest notes that he is much older than the rest of their group - Maias' age or older, she had to guess. She takes the offered seat with a murmured thanks.
The two begin to chat - Moadan explains that the Mage had already paid him a visit and had told him that Tempest and her friends were going to be arriving soon, and Tempest makes an off-hand comment that she's going to murder him - which only makes Moadan laugh. He apologies for making her travel all the way to the south and out of the way, but he couldn't just leave his tribe - after all, he was the one protecting them, and he had to teach the spell to his apprentice before leaving, so that she could take up the work in his absence.
"I'll drop the barrier and your friends are more than welcome to make themselves at home, they must be exhausted." The dragonborn offers, much to Tempest's continued surprise. She had expected they would have to camp outside of the barrier, but certainly this was a better option. "We can set out tomorrow, if that's all right with you and yours. Again, my apologies that you've had to come all this way just to grab up an old dragonborn."
"Apologies aren't necessary, please." Tempest stammers a bit, unused to being so polite. "And I thank you for your hospitality. But if I may ask a question?"
"Certainly, young mage. Anything."
She quirks a smile. "That's a dangerous thing to say. But that barrier of yours - why is it that I was able to pass through, but my - friends could not? Is it because you knew I was coming?"
A secretive little smile appears on the dragonborn's face, and he leasn forward in his chair with a chuckle. "That isn't the case, I'm afraid, but I'm honored you think I'm that skilled.
Rather, it's built to to keep out those of pure blood. Dragonborn, for the most part, are half-bloods, yes? There are very few who are born the way we are. The barrier will certainly let them in, but - it is meant only to allow our brethren, and no one else who may pose a threat."
Tempest surprised both Moadan and herself by laughing.
"I . . . had not known that would be amusing, but to each their own. Though - how is it that you got through the barrier?"
Now it was Tempest's turn for her own, secretive little smile.
"I'm a half-elf." She says through her laughter, and Moadan's eyes widen almost comically. "That is the first time my blood has been useful to me."
The dragonborn stares at her as Tempest chuckles again, and a bright smile spreads across his face as the two share a laugh.
When the memory ends, Makie will find himself back in the room, string still in hand]
[Tempest certainly comes from a richly interesting world. She finds many do, on the Fleet, but rarely does she get the chance to experience it.
A half blood elf, she's getting the distinct impression, is an object of scorn. Bloodlines are important no matter where she goes, it seems. She stares down at the string in her fingers, then unwinds it and places it gently back onto the bed. There's only one thing left now; unless something about the room has changed, she tries the brooch.]
